Dream Bigger Than Your Bills!
Today Ben and Ernie are joined by returning guest and YNAB Lead Educator, Erin Lowell, who posed the idea of thinking bigger with your money. Many people come to YNAB seeking a way to escape the paycheck to paycheck cycle, pay down debt, build an emergency fund, and reduce their stress and anxiety around money. These are wonderful goals! However Erin reminds us that there are things you can do with your money beyond paying the bills, and she wants you to experience those things. Paying bills and handling unexpected expenses with cash for the first time is a thrilling feeling, but it's not the highest use of your money. Dream bigger than your bills!

Freezer is on top because traditionally fridges were simpler and just had one condenser portion up top. Cold air falls, so it would circulate to the fridge part on the bottom. So things that needed to be frozen would be near the cold element and things that needed to be kept above freezing could be kept further away.

I'm frustated desktop/web doesn't support newlines in a memo. Limits the usefulness and kind of makes me need to keep it relatively short. I kind of can on mobile, but then it confuses web/desktop a bit

I've already listened to this via the podcast but had to come here to comment. I love it when Erin comes on the show. She is just the best, hopefully she will come back to discuss her new budget from after paying off the mortgage like you all talked about in that episode. Also, I'm curious as you always talk about how expensive car seats are and how you have to keep buying new ones. I live in Australia, we have convertible car seats that go from birth to 4 years old (some will go even higher in age). Does America not have car seats that convert from rear facing lying down to front facing sitting up? That is just hard for me to believe or understand honestly.

Request: Can we get an "Archive" feature? "Archive" would take the current place of the "hidden" category as described in the video (no deleting a category in case you want to see it for reports or bring it back later), however "hidden" would now be specifically for hiding a category for a short period of time (or if you don't want to see it for a specific reason temporarily). I feel like the modification area of YNAB could use a makeover soon! I've been using YNAB for almost 6 years and love it!

  •  20 годин тому

This was fantastic - thank you for running through the new target functionality. Question - what recommendations would you have for scheduled transactions vs targets? For example, I know $1,000 will be withdrawn each 1st of the month from my checking account for my mortgage. Do you recommend a scheduled transaction for the exact amount or a target?

Too bad the first rule now transformed into a habit feels clunky. I mean I felt straight forward tome as a rule, but if someone working at YNAB feels its clunky and the rules should be a habit, there could be room for improving the first rule ehrm.... habit .... confusing. Don't get me wrong, I love YNAB. However, my advice would be to first learn YNAB and then dive into the YNAB podcast that tends to redefine the established terms and come up with nuanced views based on those redefined terms.

Rule 4: age your tasks! I think David Allen has a line about this. We tend to give false urgency to tasks as they arise, but actually the (counterintuitive) goal is to delay tasks so you focus more on the prioritized list you’ve already defined, instead of constantly reacting to new tasks as they arise. 🤓

I leveled up my budgeting a lot when I integrated IFTTT with YNAB using the API (and AWS Lambda).
